Most people pick an installation method based on price. Or they ask a friend. Or they just go with whatever the installer recommends without understanding why.

Then they walk across the finished floor and hear a hollow thud — and wish they’d asked more questions before the boards went down.

Choosing the right engineered hardwood installation method isn’t complicated. But it does depend on three things most guides skip: your subfloor type, your board width, and what “good” actually feels like underfoot. This article covers all three, with enough specifics to make the right call before anyone picks up a trowel.

Glue Down Engineered Hardwood: The Most Stable Method

Glue down means exactly what it sounds like. The boards are bonded directly to the subfloor using a flexible adhesive, with no underlayment and no movement.

Why it works well:

The floor becomes part of the subfloor. There’s no air gap, no flex, no hollow sound. Underfoot, a well-glued engineered floor feels almost identical to solid hardwood — dense, quiet, and solid.

For underfloor heating, it’s the only method worth considering. Direct contact between the board and the heated subfloor means efficient heat transfer. A floating floor with foam underlayment sitting on top of a UFH system is an insulating layer — you’re fighting the system, not working with it.

The trade-offs:

Glue down requires a near-perfect subfloor. Flat to 3mm over 1.8 metres, moisture content below 75% RH for concrete slabs. Any deviation shows up in the finished floor, and fixing it after the fact means pulling up boards.

It also takes longer. The wood flooring adhesive needs 24–48 hours to cure fully before foot traffic. And if you need to replace a single damaged board later, you’re cutting into a bonded floor — not just unlocking a plank.

When glue down goes wrong:

The most common failure is using the wrong adhesive. Water-based adhesives over concrete trap moisture — use a moisture-resistant, flexible MS polymer or polyurethane adhesive. The second most common failure is applying adhesive unevenly. Thin spots create hollow sounds post-install, and injecting flexible adhesive through drilled holes is the only fix.

Best for: Concrete subfloors, wide-plank boards (over 180mm), underfloor heating, commercial projects, any installation where long-term stability matters more than installation speed.


Floating Engineered Hardwood: The Fastest Install

In a floating installation, the boards lock together but aren’t fixed to the subfloor. They rest on a foam or cork underlayment and move as a single unit.

Why it’s popular:

Speed. A competent DIYer can float a 30㎡ room in a day. No adhesive, no waiting, no specialist tools. If a board gets damaged six months later, you unlock the planks from the edge of the room, replace the board, and lock everything back.

For renovation projects — going over existing tile, vinyl, or timber — floating avoids the need to remove the old floor entirely. Add 2–3mm underlayment, check that the height difference at transitions works, and you’re ready to lay.

The hollow sound problem:

This is the one thing most floating floor guides don’t address honestly. Any floating floor will sound slightly hollow compared to a glued-down floor. That’s physics — there’s an air gap underneath. In a well-prepared room with good underlayment, the sound is minimal. On a slightly uneven subfloor, it’s noticeable.

If anyone in your household is sensitive to floor noise, test this before committing. Tap the back of a board on the underlayment in the showroom or supplier’s warehouse. That’s approximately what it will sound like finished.

The 8-metre rule:

Floating floors expand and contract with humidity changes. In any direction, keep runs under 8 metres (about 26 feet) without a T-bar transition joint. Most guides mention this. Few homeowners remember it when laying a long hallway or open-plan space that runs 12 metres wall to wall.

Skip the transition joint, and you’ll either get buckling in summer or gapping in winter.

Wide planks and floating don’t mix well:

A 120mm board floating over a concrete slab is usually fine. A 220mm wide-plank floating in a room that sees 20% RH swings between winter and summer is a problem waiting to happen. Wide boards amplify every moisture movement. If you’re buying wide-plank engineered hardwood, glue it down.

Best for: Renovation projects, DIY installs, rental properties, narrower boards (under 180mm), any project where future removal or replacement matters.


Nail and Staple Down: The Traditional Method

Nail or staple down is the original method for hardwood installation and still the preferred choice for professional installers working on timber subfloors in North America and parts of Europe.

The boards are fixed to the subfloor using a pneumatic nail gun or stapler through the tongue of each board. The fastener is hidden by the next board’s groove.

When it makes sense:

Timber subfloors of at least 19mm (3/4″) thickness. The fasteners need something solid to grip — below 18mm, they don’t hold well. The method also requires a nail gun and some technique, so it’s not ideal for first-time DIYers.

The result is a floor that’s fully fixed without adhesive — easier to repair locally than glue down, more rigid than floating. In North America where timber subfloors and solid hardwood tradition both run deep, this is often the default.

What to watch for:

Over time, fasteners can work loose — especially in engineered boards with thinner plywood cores. Squeaking is the usual symptom. It’s not structural, but it’s persistent. Using ring-shank nails rather than smooth-shank significantly reduces this risk.

Nail down is also not suitable for concrete without a timber intermediate layer. If you have a concrete slab and want the rigidity of a fixed install, glue down is the equivalent.

Best for: Timber subfloors, professional installs, boards over 12mm thick, North American residential projects.


The Three Questions That Actually Decide the Method

Most installation guides present these three methods as roughly equal choices. They aren’t. The right answer almost always comes down to three specific factors:

1. What is your subfloor made of? Concrete → glue down or floating. Timber → all three methods are viable. If you’re not sure, knock on it. Timber sounds hollow, concrete doesn’t.

2. How wide are your boards? Under 150mm — any method works. 150–180mm — floating is fine with good underlayment and humidity control. Over 180mm — glue down. Wide boards amplify movement. Don’t fight that with a floating installation.

3. How long are you staying? Five years or less: floating. The floor goes down quickly, comes up easily, and the slightly hollow sound is easy to live with short-term. Ten years or more: glue down. The upfront cost and complexity pay back in a floor that sounds and feels better every year.

From the Factory: What We Tell Every Installer

We ship two profiles: T&G (tongue and groove) and click lock engineered hardwood flooring systems. The question we get most often from distributors is: which profile for which installation method?

The short answer:

  • T&G is designed for glue-down and nail-down. The joint is tighter, it’s meant to be bonded or fastened, and it performs better in large-area commercial installs.
  • Click Lock is designed for floating. The locking geometry allows for the slight movement that floating floors experience. On boards over 180mm, we still recommend glue-down even with click lock — the profile accommodates it.

One thing worth knowing: not all click lock profiles are equal. A weak click mechanism on a wide board will allow micro-movement at the joint over time, leading to a slight ridge or separation. When you’re sourcing, ask the manufacturer what load the click joint is rated for. A good click profile on a wide board should resist at least 700N lateral force before joint failure.


What We See After 10,000㎡ of Engineered Hardwood Installations

We ship engineered hardwood to contractors and distributors across Europe and North America. After enough projects, patterns emerge.

Europe splits almost evenly between glue down and floating. Northern European markets — Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands — lean toward glue down, partly because concrete subfloors dominate new construction, and partly because the professional installation culture there treats floating as a secondary option. Southern European and UK markets show more floating installs, particularly in renovation projects where speed and cost matter.

North America is predominantly glue down. The combination of concrete slab construction in new builds and strong preference for the underfoot feel of a bonded floor makes glue down the default for most professional installers we work with in the US and Canada. Nail down appears regularly in older homes with existing timber subfloors — but for engineered hardwood specifically, glue down has largely overtaken it.

The most common installation complaint we receive has nothing to do with the method. It’s humidity. Floors that gap in winter, cup in spring, or develop persistent squeaks in floating installs — when we trace the issue back, the root cause is almost always a room running below 35% RH in winter or spiking above 65% RH in summer. The installation method didn’t fail. The environment wasn’t controlled.

This comes up often enough that we now include humidity management guidelines in every product shipment. A floor installed correctly in an uncontrolled environment will underperform a floor installed adequately in a well-managed one. If you’re investing in wide-plank engineered hardwood — particularly boards over 180mm — a hygrometer and a plan for humidity control are as important as the adhesive.


FAQ

Can I float engineered hardwood directly over concrete?

Yes, with the right underlayment. Use a 2–3mm foam or cork underlayment with an integrated vapour barrier if the slab is ground level or below grade. Test the slab moisture first — over 75% RH and you have a moisture problem to fix before any floor goes down.

Does glue down engineered hardwood need underlayment?

No. The wood flooring adhesive bonds directly to the subfloor. Some adhesives specify no underlayment — check the product data sheet. Adding foam underlayment under a glue-down install reduces bond strength and can cause hollow spots.

Can I use click lock flooring for a glue-down installation?

Most click lock boards can be glued down, but check with the manufacturer first. The profile geometry may affect how well adhesive contacts the subfloor. For high-performance glue-down over concrete or UFH, T&G is generally the better engineered choice.
