Engineered Timber Flooring vs Vinyl Flooring

It can take time to decide between two almost identical timber floorings. Engineered timber flooring and Vinyl flooring. So, what are these two types of flooring, and which is best for you? While they are popular, each has different characteristics and is made differently.

To make it easier for you, we will explore deeper to know their composition, differences, and pros and cons. You will also understand their durability, ease of maintenance, and more. Let’s dive in.

What is Engineered Timber Flooring

This is a classic style of multi-layered flooring with the top (wear) made of various types of wood such as oak, maple, teak, or walnut.  Below are a couple of layers of plywood that enhance its durability and strength as well as structure.

Engineered timber flooring also comes in various designs such as matita, rhombus, and trapezoid patterns. So, how is this flooring made? It is made by bonding several layers of wood, the top being hardwood and below plywood. These layers are called laminas and they are joined together using adhesives. They can also vary in size depending on your flooring needs.

What is Vinyl Flooring

While vinyl flooring may have a hardwood appearance, it is made of fiberboard stuck in layers to bring out the versatile look. This flooring is mainly made from PVC that is layered together with other components like foam and fiberglass. These materials bring out the sheen, color, flexibility, and hardness of vinyl flooring.

This type of flooring mimics various appearances such as ceramic, wood, or stone. The designs can be endless. Vinyl flooring is also easy to maintain owing to its scratch-free traits and can go for decades without replacement.

Difference Between Engineered Timber Flooring vs Vinyl Flooring

Let’s look at some of the differences between engineered timber flooring and vinyl flooring.

Durability and Longevity

Considering engineered timber flooring is made of hardwood, it can go for 20 to 30 years if well maintained. While it is susceptible to wear and tear, you can sand it several times to maintain the original sheen. You should however not install it in moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

On the other hand, Vinyl flooring lasts between 15 to 20 years, which is well below engineered timber flooring. While it also wears over time, it’s considered great for homes with pets and little ones. This is because it is highly resistant to scratches and dents.

Material Composition

The material composition of these flooring types greatly differs. This is because engineered timber flooring composes a top layer of hardwood bonded to other layers of plywood.

Vinyl on the other hand is composed of synthetic materials like PVC, foam, and fiberglass to create a wood-like feel to your floor.

Both engineered and vinyl flooring are made in planks that interlock in various designs like tongue and groove or click clock.  But, vinyl flooring can also be installed using the peel-and-stick method.  All these make it easy to install and are DIY-friendly since you don’t have to be a professional to install it.

Clearly engineered wood flooring is more compared to vinyl flooring. This is because engineered floors average between $16 and $20 per sqft to install. Vinyl floor installation on the other hand is between $3 and $11 per sqft.

Maintenance and Care

Both engineered and vinyl flooring need maintenance. However, engineered timber floors require more maintenance as they are more prone to scratches, dents, and moisture. You will need to clean them more and occasionally sand them to retain the luster. It is also advisable to use minimal water when mopping engineered timber flooring. Vinyl floors are easier to maintain as you can vacuum, dust, or mop.

Which Is the Right Flooring for You?

The right type of flooring trickles down to your personal needs and preferences. Before choosing the right flooring for your space, consider your budget and the average costs between the two.

What kind of feel do you want? Is it a natural wood feel or a look-alike? Both are good and will last a long time if well taken care of. Also, consider the desired use of space. Is it for your office or your home? How much traffic will you have? These questions will help to determine which flooring is right for you.

Engineered timber flooring and vinyl flooring are all excellent choices of flooring for your home. But, you must note their key differences. While engineered timber flooring is expected to last longer, vinyl flooring may not. Engineered timber flooring is also more expensive than vinyl flooring.
