What Is a Solid Wood Stair Tread?

A solid wood stair tread is exactly what it sounds like: a tread cut and built entirely from solid hardwood, usually edge-glued from several boards of the same species to reach the full width needed for a step. The front edge is shaped into a nosing profile — often a bullnose or eased edge — and the surface is sanded, stained, and finished like any other piece of hardwood.

Because the entire tread is solid timber, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life, the same way a solid hardwood floor can. This is the main reason solid wood is still the default choice for staircases meant to last the lifetime of a home.

The trade-off is that solid wood moves with humidity and temperature. In climates with big seasonal swings, a wide solid tread can expand, contract, or occasionally cup slightly if it isn’t acclimated and installed correctly.


What Is an Engineered Hardwood Stair Tread?

An engineered hardwood stair tread is built from a multi-layer hardwood core, topped with a hardwood wear layer — the same construction logic used in engineered hardwood flooring. The layers are cross-laminated, which is what gives engineered wood its main advantage: it resists expansion and contraction far better than solid wood, especially in environments where humidity changes throughout the year.

It’s worth being precise about this category, because “engineered stair tread” gets used loosely online. At the low end, some imported treads are little more than a basic core with a very thin veneer glued on top — closer to a cosmetic skin than a true wear layer. A well-built engineered stair tread is different: a genuine multi-layer hardwood core under a hardwood wear layer thick enough to be sanded and finished like solid wood, made in the same production process as engineered hardwood flooring rather than as an afterthought.

When you’re sourcing engineered treads, it’s worth asking exactly how thick that top layer is and whether it comes from the same manufacturing line as the flooring it’s meant to match — that single question tells you a lot about the quality tier you’re looking at.

When Solid Wood Is the Better Choice

For staircases that need to last 30+ years. Solid wood’s biggest advantage is its refinishing ceiling. Because there’s no structural boundary between the wear surface and the rest of the board, a solid tread can be sanded back significantly more than an engineered tread before the material is exhausted. On a busy family staircase, that matters.

For glue-laminated construction. Some specifiers and stair contractors specifically request solid glue-laminated treads — multiple pieces of solid hardwood bonded together edge-to-edge — for their dimensional stability and strength. This is a different product from a veneer-style engineered tread, and it’s worth knowing the distinction exists when reviewing supplier options.

For dry, stable climates. If your project is in a region where indoor humidity stays relatively consistent year-round — or if the staircase is in a temperature-controlled commercial space — solid wood performs exactly as expected with no movement issues.


When Engineered Hardwood Is the Better Choice

For matching an existing engineered hardwood floor. If the floor at the base of the staircase is engineered hardwood, matching it with an engineered tread from the same production line gives the closest possible colour and grain consistency. Ordering treads and flooring from the same manufacturer — ideally from the same production batch — is the most reliable way to achieve a true match.

For humid or variable climates. Coastal regions, basements, or any space where relative humidity changes significantly between seasons will put stress on a wide solid tread. Engineered construction handles those swings without gapping or cupping.

For budget-sensitive projects. Engineered hardwood typically costs less per tread than solid wood of the same species, while delivering a comparable surface appearance and reasonable longevity if the wear layer is substantial.


The One Question to Ask Any Supplier

Whether you’re buying solid or engineered treads, one question cuts through most supplier ambiguity: how thick is the wear layer, and how many times can it be refinished?

For solid treads, the answer is straightforward — the entire tread thickness is usable, minus whatever is lost to sanding each cycle. For engineered treads, the answer tells you immediately whether you’re looking at a serious product or a cosmetic one. A wear layer under 2 mm cannot be meaningfully refinished; a wear layer of 4 mm or more behaves much closer to solid wood in practice.

If a supplier can’t or won’t answer that question precisely, treat it as a signal about everything else you can’t see in the product.

Yes, if the wear layer is thick enough. A genuine engineered tread with a substantial hardwood wear layer — typically 3 mm or more — can be lightly sanded and refinished. A thin veneer under 2 mm cannot. Always confirm the wear layer thickness with your supplier before ordering if refinishing is a priority.

Is solid wood always more durable than engineered hardwood on stairs?

Not in every environment. Solid wood resists heavy wear and repeated refinishing better over the long term, but engineered hardwood resists warping and gapping better in humid or fluctuating climates. Durability depends on which kind of stress the tread is under — foot traffic or moisture movement.

A different species can work, but it usually requires more finishing work on-site to blend the colour.
