Most flooring failures don’t happen during installation. They happen before it.
The floor gets delivered. Someone counts to 48 hours. Installation starts. Six weeks later, the boards are gapping in winter or cupping at the edges in summer — and nobody can explain why.
The explanation is almost always the same: the acclimation was treated as a waiting exercise, not a measurement exercise. Engineered hardwood acclimation is the process of bringing the moisture content of your boards into equilibrium with the room they’ll live in. Time is a factor. It’s not the only factor — and for many jobs, it’s not even the most important one.
What Engineered Hardwood Acclimation Actually Means
Wood is hygroscopic. Even engineered hardwood — with its cross-laminated plywood core — still contains real timber in the wear layer, and that timber absorbs and releases moisture in response to the air around it.
The goal of acclimation is to reach what’s called equilibrium moisture content (EMC): the point at which the boards are neither gaining nor losing moisture. At EMC, the boards are stable. Install them at EMC, and they stay stable. Install them before they’ve reached it, and the movement happens after — inside your finished floor.
For engineered hardwood specifically, the target is this: the moisture content (MC) of your boards should be within 2% of the subfloor’s MC before installation begins. For wide planks over 75mm (3″), keep that margin tight — closer to 1%.
That’s the definition. Everything else follows from it.
How to Acclimate Engineered Hardwood Flooring Step by Step

Before the boards arrive, the room needs to be ready. Not roughly ready — actually ready.
Step 1: Run the HVAC for at least 5 days before delivery. The room should be at normal living conditions: 18–24°C (65–75°F), 40–55% relative humidity. If the heating or air conditioning has only been on for a day, the room hasn’t stabilised. Deliver the boards into an unstable environment and the acclimation baseline is worthless.
Step 2: Bring the boards into the installation room. Not the garage. Not the hallway. Not a storage room with a different temperature. The room where the floor will be installed. The boards need to acclimatise to the specific conditions of that space.
Step 3: Open the boxes and remove the plastic wrapping. Boards sealed in plastic can’t exchange moisture with the air. Cut the wrapping, open both ends of each box, and if possible, remove the boards entirely.
Step 4: Stack with spacers or lay flat with gaps. Air needs to circulate around every board. Cross-stack them with small offcuts as spacers between layers, or lay them flat with 10–15mm gaps between boards. A pile of boards stacked face-to-face with no airflow will barely acclimate at all.
Step 5: Measure MC every 24 hours. Use a pinless moisture meter. Take readings from multiple boards — at least 5–10 across the batch, including boards from different boxes. Note the readings each day.
Step 6: Test the subfloor MC simultaneously. For a timber subfloor: MC should be below 12%, and within 2% of the flooring MC. For a concrete slab: use an in-situ RH probe — you’re looking for under 75% relative humidity. If the slab is still above 75% RH, the acclimation of the boards is the least of your problems.
Step 7: Install when the readings stabilise and the gap is within 2%. Not when the clock hits 48 hours. When the numbers say so.
How Long Does Engineered Hardwood Acclimation Take?
The honest answer: it depends on how far the boards are from equilibrium when they arrive.
Most manufacturers specify a minimum of 48 hours. That’s a floor, not a target. In ideal conditions — a climate-controlled room, boards delivered at close to the correct MC — 48–72 hours is usually enough. In less ideal conditions, it can take significantly longer.

One more thing worth knowing: a long acclimation period in good conditions doesn’t protect against a bad one at the end. An expert at Wood Floor Business put it plainly — sixty days of acclimation in ideal conditions, followed by five days of extreme heat during installation, can still equal a failure. Measure at the time of installation, not just at the start.
Five Acclimation Mistakes That Cause Problems Later
1. Acclimating in the wrong room. A garage in January, a corridor near an exterior door, a basement that isn’t climate-controlled — none of these reflect the conditions of the finished room. The boards will acclimatise to wherever they are. Put them somewhere wrong, and they’ll be wrong when you install them.
2. Leaving boards in sealed boxes. Sealed plastic wrapping and closed cardboard boxes severely restrict airflow. Some moisture exchange happens through the packaging, but it’s slow and uneven. Open everything.
3. Placing boards near heat sources or in direct sunlight. A board sitting next to a radiator or under a south-facing window will dry out one side faster than the other, causing pre-installation warping. Keep boards away from localised heat and out of direct sun.
4. Watching the clock instead of the meter. “We left them for 72 hours” is not evidence of successful acclimation. “The boards measured 8.5% MC and the timber subfloor measured 9.2% MC” is. The meter is the answer. The clock is just context.
5. Skipping the subfloor test. The boards can be perfectly acclimated and still fail if the subfloor is too wet. A concrete slab that reads 82% RH will push moisture into even a well-acclimated floor once it’s down. Test both, not just the boards.
What We See After Shipping to Hundreds of Job Sites
Acclimation is the number one topic we get questions about after delivery — more than installation method, more than subfloor prep, more than anything else.
The pattern we see most often: boards arrive at a job site in Northern Europe or Canada in the middle of winter. The building is heated, but the boards are unloaded into a cold entrance or storeroom first. By the time they make it to the installation room, the crew has already counted the 48 hours from delivery. The boards go down. By spring, the gaps are visible.
The fix isn’t complicated. Measure the MC on arrival. Bring the boards directly to the installation room. Don’t start counting until the room conditions are stable and the boards are open and stacked properly. Measure again before you start laying.
We ship our boards pre-conditioned to a controlled humidity range at the factory. But a container crossing from Shanghai to Hamburg in February, or arriving in Miami in August, will experience significant temperature and humidity changes in transit. The MC when the container was packed is not the MC when it arrives on site. Always measure on delivery — don’t assume.

If they’re too wet, they’ll dry out and contract — leading to gapping. Either way, the movement happens after the floor is down.
How do I know acclimation is complete without a moisture meter?
You don’t — not with any certainty. A moisture meter costs $30–$100 for a basic pinless model and pays for itself on the first job where it prevents a callback. If a meter genuinely isn’t available, the safest approach is to extend the acclimation period well beyond the manufacturer minimum and ensure the room conditions have been stable for at least a week. But this is a workaround, not a method.
