For a small space, consider the use of wider planks like 5-inch or 6-inch widths for creating fewer seams and achieving a modern look. Use thinner width planks like 2 -1/4 inch to 3-1/4-inch widths for intricate patterns like herringbone or chevron designs.
Because wide planks are sourced from older, larger trees, the larger widths are less common. As a result, wide planks are generally more expensive than narrower planks. A commonly sold white-oak narrow plank can cost between $3-$6. A wide plank can range anywhere between $7- $15 unfinished and $10-$21 pre-finished.
Wide plank flooring refers to floors that use boards which are much wider than the typical 2¼” to 3” boards used in commercial flooring. A wide plank floor may use boards that are 8” to 20” or more, creating a more striking and distinctive look that allows the grain and the personality of the hardwood to shine through.
Typically, solid hardwood flooring is between 5/16 and ¾ inches thick. Those are pretty standard thicknesses that serve most needs. Engineered hardwood can come in different thicknesses but generally, it’s about the same offerings as solid hardwood.
High quality engineered hardwood floors can be up to 12″ wide, which means you can expand your flooring dreams with your planks! Even if you want your flooring to be 6″ or under width-wise, engineered hardwood flooring is still your best option since it’s less likely to become damaged when the weather changes
However, wide plank hardwood floors have appeared in more homes over the years, and the trend is here to stay in 2023. Since minimal decorating is popular, many people are putting more emphasis on their floors and walls. Wide planks are a great option to consider if you’re looking to put your hardwood floor on display.
If your planks are too large, they will make things look out of proportion. We recommend going no larger than 6-8 inches in width for small rooms. Anything larger than this may overwhelm the room and make it look even smaller. Also, consider choosing a light color and stain to give the room a more spacious appearance.
Many types of wood flooring are conducive to being installed by the DIY enthusiast, but wide hardwood planks aren’t one of them. Not only are they more prone to warping and cupping if improperly installed, their extra width makes them more likely to crack and split.
