COMMON QUESTION

Douglas Fir Flooring FAQ Guide

Is Douglas fir good for flooring?

Yes. Douglas fir flooring offers a combination of attractive straight grain, warm amber tones, and structural durability that makes it a popular choice across residential and commercial applications. While it is classified as a softwood, its Janka hardness of 660 lbf gives it better wear resistance than many other softwood species, and it performs well in moderate-traffic environments with proper finishing.

Solid Douglas fir flooring is milled from a single piece of wood, making it thicker and refinishable multiple times over its lifespan. Engineered Douglas fir flooring uses a real Douglas fir veneer bonded to a multi-ply plywood core, which significantly improves dimensional stability in environments with humidity variation or underfloor heating. For most modern commercial and large-format residential projects, engineered construction is recommended.

Solid Douglas fir flooring can be sanded and refinished multiple times — typically 3 to 5 times over its life depending on plank thickness. Engineered Douglas fir flooring can be lightly sanded and refinished 1 to 3 times depending on the thickness of the top wear layer. Both options extend the functional lifespan of the floor significantly compared to pre-finished alternatives.

Douglas fir has a Janka hardness of approximately 660 lbf, which is higher than most common pine species including eastern white pine (380 lbf) and western white pine (420 lbf). It is softer than traditional hardwoods such as red oak (1,290 lbf) or hard maple (1,450 lbf), but offers a better strength-to-weight ratio than many other softwood alternatives, making it well suited for flooring in residential and moderate-traffic commercial settings.
